Old State House Museum

The Old State House Museum is Arkansas's original state capitol and the oldest standing state capitol west of the Mississippi River. Since its construction began in 1833, the building and its grounds have witnessed many of Arkansas' most significant events. Exhibits and events at the museum are now open to the public. The Old State House, formerly known as the Arkansas State House, is the West's oldest surviving state capitol building. It hosted both the secession convention and the fourth constitutional convention, where delegates agreed to grant freedmen voting rights and establish public education.

History of Old State House Museum

The State House in Little Rock, Arkansas, was constructed between 1833 and 1842 in Greek Revival style by architect Gideon Shryock. It served as the state capitol until a new building was constructed in 1912. During the American Civil War, the building was used as the site of a secession convention and later occupied by Federal troops. It was also the site of a constitutional convention during Reconstruction, as well as the Brooks-Baxter War. The building later served as a medical school, war memorial, and office building before being designated as a museum in 1947. The building underwent major renovation in 1996 and is now a National Historic Landmark, housing exhibits related to Arkansas history and culture.
